Perception analyzer technology as a tool for participatory research

The hallmark of community-based participatory research lies in the respectful covenant that emerges when community residents join together with interested organizations and institutions, sharing fully in all aspects of decision-making related to: (1) identifying health disparities in their community, (2) delineating the causes for those health disparities, (3) taking planned actions to mitigate those causes, and (4) monitoring the progress and impact of the actions taken. Accountable Communities: Healthy Together employs a community-based participatory research approach in a sustained effort to redress the social, economic, and environmental determinants of health disparities experienced by residents of Neighborhood Planning Unit V (NPU-V), a cluster of five inner-city Atlanta neighborhoods. In the first year of this effort, emphasis was placed on documenting the potential causes of health disparities in NPU-V. This paper illustrates how two technologies (perception analyzers and GIS mapping) were utilized to determine residents' perceptions on health, social and economic priorities as well as collective efficacy, racism, and civic participation. Perception analyzer technology allows residents to view questions on a projected screen and respond anonymously using a handheld device. The aggregated responses are then projected onto a second screen, allowing for immediate data sharing and discussion. The technology is consistent with several community-based principles including community participation in research and timely sharing of data with residents. In conjunction with perception analyzers, GIS maps were used to illustrate disparate levels of health problems between Atlanta communities and elicit responses from residents about why these disparities exist and potential areas of intervention.
