Since 1998, New York State with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Assessment Initiative has been tracking the practice of community health assessments and has responded by offering training and technical assistance to local health department staff and their partners. Assessment-related training includes: locating data, analyzing and interpreting data, evidence-based public health practice, using Epi Info/Epi Map software to analyze data, and tools for participating in collaborative planning processes. In 2005, NYSDOH collaborated with CDC to develop an assessment-based tutorial in Epi Info/Epi Map. In Spring 2006, NYSDOH conducted a survey among local health departments and their partners to better understand how these training and technical assessment opportunities impacted outcomes. This information is supplemented with observations from community health assessments and annual performance reports submitted by local health departments, community service plans submitted by hospitals, and interviews with community stakeholders. The presenter will summarize the key benefits and aspects of the training and technical assistance that are replicable.
