Background: Literature on homelessness has shown a disproportionate number of homeless women have substance abuse problems; and substance abuse problems have been identified as one reason for homeless mothers not living with their children. This study examines the differential service needs for homeless mothers who live with their children versus those who do not. Objective: The purpose of this study is to: (1) assess the prevalence rates of morbidity and service gaps; (2) identify risk factors for service gaps, and (3) evaluate self-identified immediate service needs of homeless mothers whose minor-aged children live elsewhere (n=183) and mothers whose minor-aged children live with them (n=405). Methods: Data for this study were from the National Survey of Homeless Assistance Providers and Clients. Results: Among homeless mothers with alcohol problems, those who were not living with their children had a larger gap for alcohol services than homeless mothers who live with their children. Comorbid problems posed higher risks for alcohol specific service gaps. Overall, mothers whose children live elsewhere identified greater needs for substance abuse services. Conclusions: Lack of services for substance abuse problem might impose additional barriers for homeless mothers to unite with their children. It highlights the importance of substance abuse services and family preservation for homeless mothers with children.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participants will be able to
