This speaker will discuss the status of the Healthy People 2010 Focus Area on Health Communication, including the impact of the Healthy People 2010 Midcourse Review on the focus area objectives. She will report on the latest data for the objectives and on many activities that HHS agencies are pursuing in the area of health literacy, health IT, research and evaluation of communication programs, and health care providers' communication skills. When the Health Communication objectives were released in January 2000, several of the objectives lack data to establish a baseline, set a target, and to track and monitor progress. Today, such data are available for many of these objectives.

• audience will be able to articulate the importance of providing quality health information to consumers
• audience will be able to describe the progress the nation is making in meeting the national health communication objectives
