CMS's Hospital Quality Initiative includes voluntary public reporting of clinical quality measures on Hospital Compare, and in 2006, CMS will begin collecting patient survey data about hospital care. In winter and spring 2006, we surveyed a national sample of physicians about their attitudes toward the public reporting of hospital quality data and consumer use of that data. Prior qualitative work with physicians revealed attitudes about using quality data with their patients and toward public reporting. This survey gauged the extent to which these and other attitudes are pervasive, the extent to which there are differences in attitudes across geographic regions or among medical specialties, and other factors that may help inform a campaign to promote public and professional use of the data and the Hospital Compare website.
