The Asthma Home and School Intervention program is for students, parents, schools faculty and staff. The program is school and community-based. The goal of the program is to reduce asthma morbidity in East Cleveland City Schools by implementing a coordinated approach to asthma education for students, their caregivers, schools faculty and staff. Our objective is to reduce school absenteeism, reduce emergency room visit, and increase parent, students and faculty's knowledge of asthma management.
Students in grades 3 through 5 receive asthma education and are invited to attend an Asthma summer camp program. During the educational sessions and summer camp students learn about things that can trigger their asthma, symptoms they should be aware of when an asthma attack is occurring and the proper way to use various medications. The schools faculty and staff also receive training on asthma management, how to develop an asthma action plan and preventive measures. Parents and caregivers are invited to attend a monthly asthma support group. The monthly support group meetings are used to encourage parents and caregivers to make environmental changes.
Home visits are assessed to educate parents on how to clean allergens in the home. The home visits are for students who participate in the program through their school Parents received an allergen mattress cover upon completion of home visits. Over 75 percent of the students parents participate in the home visits. Results are measured through pre and post tests, the number of participants in the program and the number of environmental change.
