Tobacco continues to be a leading cause of preventable death. An increasing number of municipalities are mobilizing efforts to pass smoke-free ordinances in public places. Although a plurality of studies have implicated secondhand smoke as a potential health risk factor there are still substantial barriers to passing legislation that would prohibit or limit smoking in such places as restaurants, bars, and bowling alleys. This presentation will outline a new approach to passing local tobacco control policy through formation of community and university partnerships. Creation of such a community partnership also may foster undergraduate and graduate service learning experience in the form of conducting focus groups, creation of social marketing messages and their evaluation. Members of the campus health honorary Eta Sigma Gamma were also exposed to advocacy while collecting petition signatures on campus and in the community
