Increasing access to high quality IUD services in low resource setting is challenged by lack of actively practicing IUD providers. Many previously trained IUD service providers fail to practice because they are not confident to provide the service. Low caseload and minimal clinical practice during training is often cited as challenges.
In the Philippines, an innovative approach is being used to revitalize IUD services. This includes: a) Short refresher course for service providers, including skills practice b) Introduction of peer coaching for on-site clinical practice d) Client generation using Family Planning Action Sessions (FPAS)
Under the LEAD Project, JHPIEGO identified public health nurses and rural health midwives to update in IUD services. The training was conducted on-site, in 2 phases (didactic and practicum), and scheduled several weeks apart. Community outreach was started to reintroduce the service. From the pool of participants, those with demonstrable IUD skills are identified as peer coaches. Follow-up visits were conducted to maintain quality.
As a result, IUD services have been revitalized in rural health units/Barangay health stations in more than thirty municipalities in four provinces. In addition, an IUD training network was established to ensure availability of technical resources regionally
The approach described has important implications for revitalizing IUD services in other low resource settings.
