Men's reproductive and sexual health care services: Are we meeting minimal standards of care?

Debra Kalmuss, PhD, Mailman School of Public Health, Department of Population and Family Health, Columbia.University, 60 Haven Ave, B-2, New York, NY 10032, 212-304-5234, dk6@columbia.edu

Despite the fact that heterosexual behavior involves a man and a woman, sexual and reproductive health (RSH) care services largely target women and non-heterosexual men. There is growing recognition of the need to extend RSH care to heterosexual men as well. Our goal is to examine the extent to which men in the U.S. receive a minimal level of RSH care and how receipt of such care is distributed across key sociodemographic and sexual risk groupings. The data in this analysis come from the 2002 National Survey of Family Growth that included a nationally representative sample of 4928 men between the ages of 15 and 44 living in the US. The NSFG provides data on whether men received specific services by a health care provider during the prior 12 months: physical examination, testicular exam, advice or counseling about birth control, STI testing/treatment, and/or advice, HIV testing, and/or advice or counseling, and sterilization advice or counseling. For this analysis of care a minimal care standard is defined as receiving at 3 of these services in the past year. We will examine the proportion of men who received: any RSH services in the 2001, at least 3 services, and the total number of services received by men who were served. We will examine how receipt of services varied by age, race/ethnicity, marital and relationship status, poverty status, health insurance status, and sexual risk status.
