The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF, 2002) recommends screening for depression in the primary care setting, coordinated with treatment. Carrying out this recommendation among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) is difficult as a suitable tool(s) for depression screening in this population has not been identified (Lunsky & Palucka, 2004). The results of research to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of two depression screening tools, the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) (Beck, Steer, & Brown, 1996) and the Glasgow Depression Scale for People with a Learning Disability (GDS-LD) (Cuthill, Espie, & Cooper, 2003) will be reported. Subjects are 120 adults with mild or moderate I/DD who respond to the BDI II and the GDS-LD and later participate in a semi-structured clinical interview with the Psychiatric Assessment Schedule for Adults with a Developmental Disability 10 (PAS-ADD 10) (Moss et al., 1997). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and overall percent agreement will be calculated at various scores on the BDI-II and GDS-LD compared to the results of the clinical interview with the PAS-ADD 10. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves will be calculated and utilized to assess the sensitivity and specificity of the tools and for any significant difference between the two tools. The research has the potential to identify a depression screening tool(s) suitable for identifying individuals with I/DD needing referral for depression treatment and will assist research by identifying tools suitable to use in the selection of subjects with I/DD for participation in depression intervention research.
