Although tobacco control efforts obviously can save millions of lives around the world, investment remains inexplicably modest especially in the context of a highly aggressive and well-funded tobacco industry, which, is focused on maintaining and expanding its global market. One investment has been The Fogarty International Center (FIC) initiative, “International Tobacco and Health Research Capacity Building Program” which represents an important step for U.S. government funding for global tobacco control. One project funded by FIC is a multi-country project to develop research capacity for tobacco control being conducted by the Institute for Global Tobacco Control in China, Brazil and Mexico. China, Brazil and Mexico are among the countries that will be burdened by the tobacco epidemic making capacity development for tobacco control research a priority. All three of these countries are now party to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), which promotes evidence-based tobacco control efforts, including restrictions that provide protection from exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke in public places. A model of capacity development is being used to guide this project and combines research skills development and mentorship and is focused on obtaining country-specific data to help in the implementation of relevant tobacco control policies or programs. This session will provide insight into the approach taken and the research foci, as well some of the main outcomes and some identified challenges posed by the effort.
