During January 2006, the Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors (ASTDD) and the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) conducted a collaborative web-survey using SurveyMonkey. The survey sought descriptive information on 1) current relationships between state oral health programs and dental or dental hygiene education institutions, 2) frustrations and concerns about these relationships, and 3) ways that ASTDD and ADEA could help foster and improve such relationships. Forty-six states (85% response) completed the survey after only 2 email reminders, with only 2 states reporting no current relationship with a school; (no territories responded). Fifty percent of the dental directors who had a working relationship held some type of faculty appointmentand 50% worked with the schools on access to care programs and planning/policy development. One-half of the state dental programs provided funding to the education institutions but only one state program received any funding from the schools. Dental and dental hygiene school contacts were being interviewed during February to provide any additional information. This presentation will summarize the types of collaborative relationships that enhance the dental workforce, assist in oral health needs assessment and surveillance, deliver preventive services in community-based programs, and leverage scarce resources to improve the oral health of underserved populations. Supported in part by HRSA MCHB Cooperative agreement U44MC00177.
