Purpose: The goal of the National Resource Center for Safe Aging (NRCSA) is to serve as a repository and dissemination point of aging and injury information for older adults, caregivers, practitioners and policymakers. The website maintains resources focused on falls, elder abuse, and motor vehicle and pedestrian safety, including an online searchable database so users may narrow searches by factors such as year and keyword.
Methods: The website was rolled out in April 2004, with a major revision implemented in February 2005. Website usage data have been collected from April 2004 through January 2006. New resources, best practices and calendar events meeting the established criteria are continuously added to the online database.
Results: At the end of the reporting period, there were approximately 450 websites with links on their pages to NRCSA. Over 800 resources, ten best practices and nearly 100 calendar events at any point in time are included on the website. Additionally, the NRCSA website had 14,380 unique visitors over the study period with an increase from 116 to 940 per month. Over the 22 month project period the website received 637,345 “hits” on 94,866 pages. Of these, 39,089 (41.2%) pages were bookmarked by the user.
Conclusions: The Safe Aging website has filled a growing need for online information on elderly injury. The number of visitors to the Safe Aging website has increased dramatically since its implementation in 2004. Additional planned components, such as podcasts, online tutorials and a listserve, will increase the website's usefulness for health professionals.
Learning Objectives: By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to
