Janey E. Skinner, MPH, Nora Goodfriend-Koven, MPH, and Timothy Berthold, MSPH. Health Education and Community Health Studies, City College of San Francisco, 50 Phelan Avenue, Cloud 363, San Francisco, CA 94112, 510 652 3932, janey@janeyskinner.com

In 2006 City College of San Francisco is launching the first community college based vocational certificate program in Trauma Prevention and Recovery, training front-line community health workers to work with victims/survivors of violence, as well as at-risk populations.

This presentation will include data from formative research conducted with employers in the greater San Francisco Bay Area that showed a need for community health workers skilled in violence prevention and direct services to trauma survivors, including refugees, victims of violence and the homeless. Qualitative data will be presented describing the expectations of students and faculty involved in the first wave of this program.

A brief description of the 15-unit certificate curriculum will be included. The Trauma Prevention and Recovery Certificate is grounded in a public health perspective, an activist orientation and a commitment to the defense and promotion of human rights. This interdisciplinary certificate integrates skills and knowledge from health education, violence prevention, community-based mental health, women's studies, humanities and child development. Several of the architects of this certificate have significant experience in the human rights field, and the integration of health and human rights in the training curriculum will be highlighted in this presentation.

The Trauma Prevention and Recovery Certificate is articulated with several related vocational programs at the college, including certificates for Community Health Worker, Drug and Alcohol Studies, HIV/STI Prevention Education, Sexual Health Educator, and Violence Intervention in Early Childhood.
