Addressing the impact of race-related structural inequalities on poverty: Strengths-based empowerment strategies

Joseph L. Mosca, PhD, Department of Social Work, Youngstown State University, One University Plaza, Youngstown, OH 44555, 330-941-3774, jmosca@ysu.edu

Social workers providing services to impoverished individuals need to consider approaches that emotionally empower clients while addressing the acquisition and maintenance of concrete needs. The strengths perspective provides a basis for assessing client capacities, incorporating them into viable strategies, and cultivating self-confidence that leads to a sense of personal empowerment. This presentation analyzes race related inequities that affect poverty, describes an evaluative process for determining client strengths, and proposes responses that effectively integrate client abilities.
