In January 2001, three machinists at a machining plant were hospitalized with hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). Subsequently, additional HP cases developed. HP has been associated with exposures to metalworking fluid (MWF) aerosols. O'Brien (2003) reported the results of MWF aerosol concentration mapping conducted at the machining plant in October 2001, before installation of mist collectors, and April 2002 after installation of mist collectors. He showed changes in mist concentrations after installation of collectors and a possible association between working in locations of high concentration and development of the disease. Here we will present a continuation of O'Brien's work by analyzing mist concentrations and fluid bacteria measurements between April 2003 and the present. The results will be discussed in the context of the plant's ongoing efforts to manage exposure and prevent further cases of HP.
