Public health professionals can play an active roll in helping private developers and public planners determine which sites are most suitable for specific types of redevelopment. For example, a site that might be suitable for building a shopping plaza may not be a good site choice for a school. There are many environmental factors that need to be considered regarding the site. Public health professionals can help ask questions and gather data to determine the appropriate uses for a site. For this step in the process the public health professional needs to be able to: conduct a site visit and look for potential hazards at the site, gather historical data on the site to determine what potential hazards exist on the site, locate and examine any environmental testing data that is available on the site, and make a determination on the appropriate use of the site based on all available information.
