Communicating risk - step two in the model

Kenneth Foscue, Division of Environmental Health, Connecticut Department of Public Health, 410 Capitol Ave, MS#11CHA, Hartford, CT 06134, 860-509-7753,

One of the key issues that public health professionals can help with in land redevelopment is communicating risk to the community. Many sites chosen for redevelopment have a reputation within the community of being “contaminated”. These sites are often perfectly suitable for redevelopment. However, with the perception of contamination hanging over the site community objections may slow or stop development because of their concerns and distrust of developers. Public health professionals are often viewed by communities are non-partial, third parties who can give them honest information about the hazards surrounding site redevelopment. Public health professionals can learn how to craft honest, risk communication messages to concerned community members and help keep the development process moving along smoothly.
