SESSION ABSTRACT
Although research spanning more than two decades demonstrates the high prevalence of co-occurring substance abuse and mental disorders in the general population and among persons in treatment, the treatment field remains insufficiently prepared to serve persons with co-occurring disorders. This session will provide information about the epidemiology of co-occurring disorders, policy and practice implications of the prevalence of co-occurring disorders, service and related costs associated with co-occurring disorders, evidence-based and other best practices for treating persons with Co-occurring disorders, and work underway at federal and state levels to improve the service system for this population. Moderator: Charlene Le Fauve, PhD – Federal and state collaborations to improve the service systems for persons with co-occurring disorders. 15 minutes. H. Westley Clark, MD, JD, MPH – Findings and the practice and policy implications of three surveys of the epidemiology of co-occurring disorders. 20 minutes. Tom Stegbauer, MA – Expenditures for treatment of clients with co-occurring disorders. 15 minutes. Stanley Sacks, PhD – Evidence-based treatments for persons with co-occurring disorders. 20 minutes. Andrew L. Homer, PhD - Missouri's COSIG experience: Implementing consensus and evidence-based practices. 20 minutes.
