Gauging support for policies aimed at changing the food and physical activity environment in 6 California communities: Findings from the HEAC community resident survey

PURPOSE: To describe the attitudes and opinions of residents residing in six low-income communities in California that are participating in The California Endowment's Healthy Eating, Active Communities (HEAC) Initiative. METHODS: A survey instrument was developed to assess community resident attitudes, perceptions, and engagement regarding policy strategies to change community food and physical activity environments. The HEAC community resident survey will be conducted with a representative sample from each community participating in the HEAC Initiative. Approximately 1000 respondents will be surveyed by Spring of 2006 using a random-digit dialed telephone survey method. FINDINGS: Baseline data from the survey will allow the research team to identify the environmental change approaches with the most support from community residents and whether these factors varied by demographics, geography and population size of the various communities.
