State of Aging and Health in America 2006: A national- and state-based report on older adult health

Lynda Anderson, PhD, NCCDPHP/DACH, CDC, 4770 Buford Hwy, MS K 51, Atlanta, GA 30341, 770-488-5998, laa0@cdc.gov

This session will provide information on The State of Aging and Health in America 2006 report, which will be released in November 2006 through a joint effort of the Merck Institute of Aging and Health (MIAH) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This report provides national- and state-level data on 15 health status, health risk behavior, preventive care and screening, and injury indicators, as well as examples of successful strategies and state-based projects for improving the health of older adults. The report cards show whether older Americans are reaching targets set by Healthy People and indicate areas of age, racial, and ethnic disparities. The report also contains a spotlight section on falls prevention, which describes additional data on this topic and provides examples of evidence-based, community programs that work to keep older adults from falling.

The 2004 edition of the report was widely regarded as instrumental in focusing attention on the importance of older adult health. The 2006 edition promises to be a valuable resource to public health and aging services network professionals, decision makers, media professionals, researchers, and others who seek to improve the health and quality of life of older adults.
