This paper reflects on the contributions of the landmark Handbook of Aging and the Social Sciences from the standpoint of critical perspectives in social gerontology and enduring and emerging policy debates including health and economic inequalities from a race, class and gender lens; the commodification and biomedicalization of aging; health and long term care; intergenerational relations and exchange; and globalization, privatization, and the role of the state. The Handbook is considered in light of major controversies in critical gerontology and social policy from the micro (individual), meso (organizational and institutional), and macro (social system, national and global)levels. Finally, the paper explores the challenges confronting gerontological social scientists in the role(s) of scholar, provider/practitioner, and advocate for the aging.
