Evidence-based treatments for persons with co-occurring disorders

Several approaches to serving persons with co-occurring disorders have been developed. Because of the high percentage of persons with co-occurring disorders in treatment, clinicians are encouraged to routinely use valid screening instruments, to conduct in-depth assessments when indicated, and to use assessment results to develop an appropriately integrated plan of treatment. The presentation will describe different levels or definitions of “evidence-based practices,” and will describe three interventions specifically designed for co-occurring disorders that have demonstrated effectiveness: Assertive community treatment, integrated dual disorder treatment and modified therapeutic communities. Limitations of the evidence-based practice approach with this population will be discussed.
