Hospitals are preparing for hazardous materials ncidents. An important part of preparedness is the ongoing training of hospital workers to recognize and respond properly to an incident. There has been much focus on the need for competency-based training to ensure that trained workers can carry out their assigned tasks in the event of incidents, such as mass causualty decontamination. Highly effective hazardous materials emergency response training programs using the Small Group Activity Method (SGAM) led by worker-trainers have been successful in many industries. The application of the SGAM training model led by worker-trainers to hospital-based emergency response training could prove valuable. This presentation will report on the evaluation of hospital emergency response awareness and operations-level (decontamination) training using SGAM model led by worker-trainers. This training was conducted through a patrnership between 1199SEIU Employment, Training & Job Security Program in New York City, Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn and the SEIU Education and Support Fund HazMat Training Project (funded through the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences' Worker Education and Training Program).
