M. Estela Rivero-Fuentes, PhD, Frontiers Program in Reproductive Health, The Population Council, Escondida 110, Col. Villa Coyoacan, Mexico City, 04000, Mexico, 52 55 59 99 86 52, erivero@popcouncil.org.mx

This paper explores the contextual and programmatic factors that explain the differences in access to family planning services and the quality of services received among postpartum and postabortion women in the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Haiti. Especial emphasis is placed in explaining within-country differences in quality of services. The paper also explores current barriers for a greater integration of family planning and HIV/AIDS services, especially in the context of programs to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS.
