With their knowledge of how the environment and health are interconnected, public health professionals can advocate for redevelopment that takes into consideration built environment planning. Many public planners, developers, and community advocates may be receptive to the concepts of build environment planning but need a public health professional to help demonstrate to them the benefits to the community. By advocating for build environment planning, public health professionals can not only improve the health of a community by redeveloping an unused, potentially hazardous site but also by helping to increase green spaces, promote exercise and safe walking spaces, help decrease crime and all of the other potential positive health impacts of built environments. This presentation will help public health professionals understand the basic concepts of built environment planning and give them visions of “what can be” to take back to their communities.
