“True Women” mini serial (6 episodes) was designed as an IEC instrument for women of reproductive age (15 – 49). It was produced by Libra Production in Romania, and increases women's ability to make informed choices regarding contraceptive methods and reproductive health issues. The product is a set of interactive and innovative educational videos in a “telenovela” format, with a series of stories and characters of different ages. The characters present key messages on sexual health, modern contraception, birth spacing, safe motherhood (pre- and postnatal care), prevention of breast and cervical cancer, and menopause.
The telenovela is an “edu-tainment” instrument targeting women from both rural and urban areas, from all education levels, and of low-to-medium economic levels. It's overall theme and position is to educate Romanian women to know themselves and gain control of their sexual life.
A facilitator's manual accompanies “True Women”, to be used by trainers who organize viewing sessions within factories/enterprises employing mainly women; sessions are followed by a discussion aimed at breaking down myths, rumors, and misinformation about contraception, abortion, and other women's health issues. Every participant receives a “Guide to your Health” booklet encapsulating all health information in the series.
“True Women” is one of the projects developed under the RFHI, Romanian Family Health Initiative established between the Romanian Ministry of Health, JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc., and USAID.
