Michael Botticelli, Bureau of Substance Abuse Services, 250 Washington St., 3rd Floor, Boston, MA 02108, 617-624-5151, MICHAEL.BOTTICELLI@STATE.MA.US

This session will describe how the State of Massachusetts uses alcohol and drug data to plan its substance abuse strategy to build a chronic disease model continuum of care for its substance abuse prevention and treatment system. This method was achieved as a reuslt of a State initiated comprehensive Strategic Planning process which was also encouraged by the Federal (SAMHSA) Block grant funding stream"s system of National Outcome Measures. (NOMS). An epidemiological workgroup was established to enhance data sharing capabilities for tracking drug trends to provide information on the prevalence of medical and non-medical opioid use. At present, the state does not have a uniform assessment process or standardized tools to guide decision in decision making. In response to this gap, the State will report progress to filling this gap or barriers to achieving progress.
