Ocean County College (OCC) has become the first college campus in New Jersey to go smoke free. Tobacco use usually begins in adolescence. If adolescents and young adults decide to be tobacco-free, they will likely remain tobacco-free for the rest of their lives. Preventing young people from starting to use tobacco is critical to reducing the death and disease caused by tobacco use. At OCC, Smoking had been previously banned in the buildings. However, students, faculty and staff would congregate around the building exits and smoke there. Student groups organized, faculty and staff coalitions developed and began an aggressive flier, poster and button campaign to end smoking on campus. A ground swell of support among the majority of the students, faculty and staff created petitions and asked the OCC Board of Trustees to completely ban smoking on the OCC campus. Smoking has now been pushed out to the parking lots and is not allowed on campus. An active smoking cessation program was developed by the health services department to encourage and support the smokers as they tried to quit smoking. The results of a follow-up survey showed that there is overwhelming support for this new policy.
