**SESSION ABSTRACT** Drinking patterns, health and social problems: New results with public health significance from the 2005 National Alcohol Survey

Thomas Greenfield, PhD, Alcohol Research Group, Public Health Institute, Bay Center Bldg C, Suite 400, 6475 Christie Ave, Emeryville, CA 94608, 510-642-5208, tgreenfield@arg.org

This session presents first findings from the new 2005 National Alcohol Survey, the 11th in a 5-yearly series by the Alcohol Research Group's NIAAA-funded epidemiological center. The focus is the social and health toll from drinking patterns, covering various viewpoints and special populations. We present the risks of young adults' heavy drinking for developing serious health conditions and injuries; bars and latest patronage trends in relation to youthful heavy drinking; the impact of social inequality (unfair treatment, poverty, and stigma) on ethnic minorities' alcohol problems; the role that acculturation plays in Latina's drinking and drunkenness; and key externalities respondents report from other peoples' drinking. After a 5 minute introduction by Tom Greenfield, each presenter will have 12 minutes to be followed by the discussant, NIAAA's Michael Hilton's 15 minute critical appraisal with an emphasis on translating findings into practice. Time will be rigidly kept to allow a full 10 minutes for audience participation.
