Taking on alcohol-related sexual assault: Utilizing a youth-adult partnership model to break the link between alcohol and sexual assault among young people

Maureen Sedonaen, Jennifer Juras, PhD, and Margaret Libby, MSW. Youth Leadership Institute, 24 Belvedere St, San Rafael, CA 94901, 415-455-1676, jjuras@yli.org

This presentation will focus on a promising model that pairs youth and adults to: 1) assist county leaders in understanding the link between alcohol and sexual assault among young people and methods for addressing the problem; 2) develop much needed county baseline data for alcohol-related sexual assault among young people; 3) work to address the problem through a high school social norms campaign; and 4) use information gathered through action research to mobilize the community around the issue and create system change around how data is collected and reported.

Breaking the Link (BTL), a community coalition comprised of youth and adults representing various stakeholder groups in Marin County, California, partnered with the Youth Leadership Institute (YLI) to conduct research on the little understood problem of alcohol-related sexual assault by collecting archival data and developing and administering a high school survey.

The proposed presentation will cover BTL's 2004-05 pilot year of action research and resulting high school social norms marketing campaign aimed at reducing alcohol-related sexual assault. BTL's continuing action research and efforts to expand the social norms marketing campaign to additional high schools as well as mobilize the community around the issue and create system change will be highlighted. The presentation will include a discussion of the benefits, for both young people and communities, of youth-adult-partnerships for creating positive community change, as well as lessons learned and recommendations for other communities that want to use this approach.
