Media coverage of tobacco lobby's judicial candidate in IL Supreme Court's Southern District

Lisa Barr, MA PhD JD, Radio Television, Southern Illinois University, Communications building, Carbondale, IL 62966, 618-565-4105, drlisa2u@siu.edu

The issue of the most expensive judicial race in U.S. history bears ongoing monitoring--particularly since the new justice refused tor recuse himself from a tobacco tort case. Since the last APHA convention, two advocacy groups have made strong announcements about the judge's failures to recuse himself from cases in which there was at least the appearance of conflict of interest. This paper will perform a limited content analysis and case study of the media frame given this story. The media frame will be constructed from the areas of judicial conduct and media regulation, and also from the known anti-tort reform efforts of tobacco companies.
