Robbin Derry, PhD, MBA, Kellogg School, Ford Center for Global Citizenship, Northwestern University, MORS Department, 2001 Sheridan Road, Evanston, IL 60201, 847-491-4976, r-derry@northwestern.edu

In light of recent overtures made by the tobacco industry to meet with tobacco control research scientists and policy experts, it is important to discuss the conditions under which this could happen. This session brings together key contributors in tobacco control research and policy to describe and debate the terms that must be met for genuine dialogue between the tobacco industry and the public health community. We will map out anticipated as well as aspirational outcomes of such an exchange. The state of low trust and high distrust between these two groups will be illuminated in comparison to other industries that have faced significant public disapproval. Alternative models of trust, distrust, and cooperation will be presented. The session aims to initiate the articulation of standards and conditions for dialogue between a powerful industry and an equally powerful activist stakeholder.
