Background: Recognizing that substance abuse among working youth is a major problem for employers, the federal Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awarded a grant to Chicanos Por La Causa to develop a culturally sensitive workplace substance abuse prevention program aimed toward predominately Latino youth between the ages of 16-24.
The program is based primarily on the Communities that Care Model and the Corazón de Aztlan curriculum. Using a framework for workplace success, the participants are encouraged to evaluate their own reasons for substance use and to examine peer, family, and societal pressures that reinforce this behavior. Wellness and coping strategies are then introduced to encourage participants to make healthy choices.
Objective: The goals of the project are to identify effective workplace prevention models that demonstrate a reduction in the negative effects of substance abuse among employees in this age range. In addition, the GetFit Website an interactive online workplace model that helps promote healthier lifestyles in and out of the workplace has also been integrated into the curriculum as a supplementary technological tool for young adults to utilize.
Methods: CPLC is presently collaborating with Pima Community College to offer this one-credit course class to all work-study students as part of their college work-study program. During the course pilot, we will conduct focus group sessions to assess the effectiveness and affect that the GetFit Website has offered to our target population.
Results: Results are forthcoming.
