The thesis of the presentation is that documented disparities related to general health issues and to oral health are linked to a mismatch between system demands and US adults' literacy skills. The presentation focuses on literacy related barriers to care with attention paid to faulty assumptions, unrealistic expectations, and poorly designed materials. The discussion will link health literacy issues with disparities and with basic rights and responsibilities.
