Building policy structures for underage drinking coalitions

Janet Williams, MA, Office of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Abuse, American Medical Association, 515 N. State, Chicago, IL 60610, 312-464-5073, janet.williams@ama-assn.org

There has been a rapid growth of local and state coalitions concerned about the health and social consequences of underage drinking. Many of these groups initially formed in response to an immediate problem and included members with similar backgrounds. As the issues surrounding underage drinking become more complex and political, these coalitions need to enhance their memberships to include organizations and individuals poised to take on the alcohol industry and its influence on elected officials. This session will focus on understanding the political power of the alcohol industry and how to design a coalition strategy that includes political expertise.
