Cultivating a legislative champion

Felicity DeBacco-Erni, MEd, Pennsylvanians Against Underage Drinking, 2413 N. Front Street, Harrisburg, PA 17110, 717-238-4354, fdebacco@padui.org

For decades, elected officials have abdicated alcohol policy development to the alcohol industry. Often times, the legislation put forth by this alliance have done little to hold the industry responsible for the problems associated with underage drinking. Underage drinking coalitions were put in the position of using energy and resources fighting bad legislation, leaving little opportunity to introduce evidenced based policies. This session will focus on how one state coalition used the political system to its advantage by conducting political research to identify and cultivate a relationship with a legislator.
