View from above: National perspective on becoming smokefree

Cynthia Hallett, MPH, Executive Director, Americans for Nonsmokers' Rights, American Nonsmokers' Rights Foundation, 2530 San Pablo Avenue, Suite J, Berkeley, CA 94702, 510-841-3032 x316, cynthia.hallett@no-smoke.org

Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death and is directly associated with many chronic diseases and cancers. Secondhand smoke exposure is extremely dangerous as well and leads to the premature deaths of over 50,000 people each year in the United States alone. While many efforts are being made to educate the public about the harmful effects of cigarette smoke, a number of states and hundreds of local municipalities have taken the unprecedented move to become smokefree in all indoor workplaces and public areas. This session will provide a national perspective of the smokefree policy movement, and examine historical trends in order to examine the successes, challenges and lessons learned from the various stages of smokefree policy campaigns, from the initial stages of public education to passage, implementation and enforcement.
