Sexoinfo.org: Addressing the sexual health information gap of Latin American youth

Genevieve Martinez-Garcia, MA, University of Maryland - College Park, 1316 Monroe St., NW, Washington, DC 20010, 202-487-7450, genevievemartine@gmail.com

Access to comprehensive and accurate sexual and reproductive health information is a fundamental human right. However, Latin American countries have not addressed the gross lack in access to information so youth can make informed decisions. Sexoinfo.org is a sexual and reproductive health education website created to address this lack of information, and empower youth to make healthy sexual decisions. Since the launch of Sexoinfo.org in July 2003, Sexoinfo.org has received over 60,000 visits, and has received and answered over 600 questions from youths throughout Latin America and the United States. This poster will share findings of an ongoing evaluation on the youth's information needs. This evaluation includes an analysis of the sexual health topics most visited by youth, the topics most frequently addressed in the questions, as well as basic demographic information of our visitors. This information will shed new light on what is on Latin American youth's minds regarding sexual health knowledge, what are the most pressing information needs and how a website can address current information gaps. This presentation will be most useful for sexual health educators currently working with Hispanic youth in the United States. This project emerged as an individual research initiative of the presenter. Its institutional independence has allowed Sexoinfo.org to discuss any sexual health topic without being limited by any institutional or political agenda.
