Objectives: To examine the association between family support and recovery from marijuana and cocaine use among adolescents enrolled in a Drug Abuse Treatment Outcome Studies-Adolescents (DATOS-A) sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).
Methods: Baseline and 12-month follow up data were collected on 1735 young drug users (71% male and 57.2% Caucasian) between 12 and 18 years of age.
Results: Based on Chi Square and logistic regression analyses results, participants were more likely to report in marijuana use at the 12-month follow-up if they received little or no support from family members (OR-2.29, p<0.05). Cocaine use at 12-month follow up was more likely among those who could not discuss problems with family members (OR=4.86, p<0.01).
Conclusion: The findings reinforce the importance of employing positive family and group therapy sessions to help improve the interpersonal relationships in substance abuse treatments.
