Myofascial Trigger Points are clinically identifiable, aching, pathological changes in the skeleton muscular system according to the definition developed by Travell in 1940. They can be differentiated from other muscular problems, such as fibromyalgia, by means of special criteria for diagnosis that will be discussed in this presentation. Myofascial Trigger Points are considered as one of the main reasons for chronic pain of the musculoskeletal system. They are found in all age groups, but especially in persons engaging in repetitive activities. Untreated, Myofascial Trigger Points can lead to excessive strain of the musculoskeletal system. Therapies vary and include various body manipulations such as classical Swedish massage, reflex zone therapy, electrotherapy as well as accupuncture needling. Deactivation of the painful Myofascial Trigger Points leads to improvement of the arterial circulation as well as a decrease of nociceptor activity. This presentation explores the phenomenon of Myofascial Trigger Points and describes various treatment strategies.
