Access to Maternity Services:

Barbara Levin, MD, MPH and Jill Alliman, RN, CNM, Msn. Women's Wellness & Maternity Center, 178 College Street, Madisonville, TN 37304, 423-337-1147, BarbL11@aol.com

For the past decade, pregnant women from across the economic scene have had difficulties accessing appropriate comprehensive maternity services in their local communities. Many factors impact this growing concern: a decreasing provider pool secondary to age, malpractice costs, and specialization; fewer businesses that cover such maternity care because of rising costs; and hospital systems which have closed such OB units because they are not profitable. All of these problems affect women equally regardless of socio-economic background. This presentation will explore these issues and the need for a national policy for access to maternal health care.
