In April 2005, the president-elect of the New Mexico Public Health Association (NMPHA) organized the annual meeting around the topic of global warming and climate change. In the spring of 2005, the environmental health community was awaiting an Executive Order for Governor Richard creating an advisory group to plan carbon emission reduction for New Mexico. NMPHA knew that the public health community needed to be informed and involved in global warming activities within our state. After hearing from environmental experts and health professionals on the impacts of global warming, the participants had the opportunity to develop public health recommendations.

These recommendations are that all responses must 1) Be evaluated to assure that no adverse public health impacts result; 2) Provide economic opportunity to low SES communities, livability of the built environment, and sustainability of communities; and 3) That public health professionals are in nearly all communities and the respect they hold in the public eye provides an excellent opportunity to link to an existing and effective infrastructure well positioned to implement broad-reaching social change.

The global warming resolution that was voted on and passed by the membership will be provided and the work that NMPHA members continue to under take on climate change issues. Resources and reference will be provided.

After the poster session, participants will be able to list potential impacts of global warming on public health, describe what activities NMPHA members are leading or participating in, and identify the role for public health in global warming activities.
