American Dental Hygienists' Association (ADHA) Perspective

Ann Battrell, RDH, MSDH(c), American Dental Hygiene Association, 444 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 3400, Chicago, IL 60611, 312-440-8900, annb@adha.net

A historical overview of ADHA's efforts on the Advanced Dental Hygiene Practitioner (ADHP) – beginning with the enactment of policy in June of 2004 by the ADHA House of Delegates to our efforts at the present time will be provided in this presentation. ADHA's efforts on the advanced dental hygiene practitioner have focused on educating our membership, pursuing funding to ‘test' or ‘pilot' the concept, developing a comprehensive Master's degree level curriculum with a consistent commitment to collaboration with other oral and health-care related associations for feedback and input as the model progresses. We will describe our efforts in each of these areas. The many changes in dental hygiene practice across the country – and, the world – have been driven by the marketplace. We will demonstrate how the ADHP represents an extension of this development requiring a multidisciplinary approach to healthcare delivery in collaboration with dentists and the rest of the healthcare delivery system. The ‘advanced practice' concept is not new – its roots run deep in the medical arena through the advent of the nurse practitioner and other mid-levels in the mid 1960's. Various forms of advanced practice hygienists perform various forms of restorative duties in nearly 40 countries around the world.
