This session combines papers submitted to the MCH section's Child Care and Genetics and Bioethics committees. Healthy Child Care America (HCCA) seeks to stimulate and support collaborative, coordinated statewide/community-based efforts to ensure safe, healthy and developmentally appropriate child care environments for all children, including children with special health care needs and their families. HCCA (3) papers in this session provide examples of effective strategies used to support the healthy development of children in early childhood and enhance their ability to enter school healthy and ready to learn. The Genetics and Bioethics section areas of interest include issues regarding ethical issues associated with the efficacy of the cost effective value of early and continuous screening; long-term health outcomes for newborn screening and delivery of genetic services; public policy issues associated with access to and equity of genetic services; issues associated with underserved populations or those with low health literacy of family health history and the transmission of information pertaining to health risks. The Genetics and Bioethics (3) papers in this session illustrate the importance of cultural competency and consumer and general public perspectives in delivering health information. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to: 1.list five objectives for measuring early learning opportunities for parents and child care providers. 2.describe the key components of a model physical fitness program for children 3-5. 3.describe the difficulties in transitioning unregulated care providers to licensed providers. 4. Appreciate the roles that advocacy has played historically and now in building and sustaining public health programs such as newborn screening. 5. Appreciate the importance of culturally competent approaches to increasing access to services. 6. Appreciate the differences between consumers and medical professionals around concepts of treatment, benefit and risk. | |||
