Sexually Transmitted Disease Epidemiology
This session will focus on the epidemiology of sexually transmitted diseases. Specific diseases to be discussed include fluoroquinolone resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae, bacterial vaginosis, herpes simplex virus type 2, and chlamydia trachomatis. The last presentation will discuss the variability of prevalence estimates for unprotected anal intercourse in a population of men who have sex with men.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Examine the prevalence of fluoroquinolone resistant neisseria gonorrhoeae among women in the United States 2. Describe bacterial vaginosis and its effects in pregnant and non-pregnant women 3. Describe the relationship between feminine hygiene product use and risk of herpes simplex virus type 2 infection 4. Identify potential risk factors for repeat gonococcal and chlamydial infections among young adults 5. Describe the range in estimates of the prevalence of unprotected anal intercourse in venue-based samples of men who have sex with men
