This session will focus on various outbreak investigations. Presentations will include outbreaks of methiciillin-susceptible staphylococcus aurea and Salmonella in jail settings, hepatitis A among illegal drug users, and Shigella sonnei gastroenteritis in a daycare center. In addition, one presentation will focus on the important mumps outbreak in Iowa in early 2006. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, the participant (learner) in this session will be able to: 1. Discuss the epidemiologic, infection control and environmental strategies for outbreak investigations in a correctional setting 2. Describe New Hampshire's response and interventions to control a hepatitis A outbreak among illegal drug users 3. Identify factors of amplification in food-borne outbreaks 4. Describe the substantial economic burdent associated with shigella outbreaks, including the total costs and the main components 5. Understand the mumps outbreak in Iowa | |||
