The purpose of this session is to discuss the evidence, issues, and public health challenges posed by HIV transmission during breastfeeding and strategies to minimize postnatal HIV infection risk while promoting optimal child nutrition, health and development in resource poor settings. Invited experts will explore this issue from diverse perspectives, including socio-cultural, ethical, and clinical perspectives. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Understand the issues and challenges of implementing international guidance on HIV and infant feeding in resource poor settings. 2. Discuss the impact of interventions to prevent HIV transmission on breast milk characteristics (viral and nutritional) and infant health outcomes. 3. Describe the role of the public health professional in advocating for appropriate policies and practices to protect infants from HIV while promoting adequate nutrition, health, and development. | |||
