This session addresses several key issues related to homeless and street-involved youth, including outreach and engagement, sexually transmitted disease (STI), risk-taking behaviors, mental health, and substance use. Because homeless adolescents are a highly disenfranchised population, engaging them in participatory research is an effective means to understand this hidden population. This engagment is discussed. The direct benefits to homeless youth are also considered. Presenters also discuss challenges to outreach and engagement for treatment services as well as prevention and health education. Presenters share ideas on adapting programs to suit the special needs of this population.
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants in this session will be able to: 1. Identify strategies for engaging homeless youth as research partners. 2. Outline steps to integrate STI testing into outreach settings for homeless youth. 3. Articulate the connection between risk-taking behaviors and mental health outcomes of homeless and street-involved youth. 4. Identify steps to develop a tailored substance use treatment program for homeless youth.
