This session addresses some of the common medical conditions among individuals experiencing homelessness and the complexities around providing primary care, including screening, diagnosis, treatment, education, self management and resources for support. Topics include diabetes self-management, tuberculosis screening and treatment, traumatic brain injury, and physical and mental illness among elderly street dwellers. Presenters discuss the impact of homelessness on the onset of illness, the exacerbation of existing conditions, and the complexities of caring for street-dwelling or sheltered individuals. | |||
Learning Objectives: At the conclusion of the session, participants in this session will be able to: 1. Identify five primary health issues common among homeless idividuals. 2. Articulate strategies for assisting clients in engaging in care, including health services, supports, and self-care. 3. Discuss how conditions of homelessness effect of onset of physical health problems and contribute to the complexities of care. | |||
